Former Ghana coach Chris Hughton has recently emerged as the primary candidate for the open position of Republic of Ireland’s manager.

According to reports, Hughton will soon travel to Dublin for discussions regarding the role with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

Initially considered for the position following Stephen Kenny’s departure in November of last year, Hughton was unable to take up the offer due to his ongoing commitment to coaching Ghana. However, circumstances have now changed, making him available for consideration once again.

Although the FAI had initially planned to announce a new appointment this week, these plans were delayed, with Hughton being the most recent candidate approached by the association.

After expressing interest in the position, talks between Hughton and the FAI began, sparking widespread speculation about his potential appointment.

Born to an Irish mother and a Ghanaian father, Hughton made history as the first mixed-race player to represent the Republic of Ireland.

As a talented defender, he earned 53 caps for Ireland, scoring one goal during a 6-0 victory over Cyprus in the 1982 World Cup qualifying match. Additionally, Hughton featured prominently in the European Championship of 1988 and the 1990 World Cup.

Following his retirement from professional football, Hughton went on to manage several English clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Birmingham City, Norwich City, and Brighton & Hove Albion.

He took charge of the Ghana national team in early 2023; however, his brief tenure resulted in mixed results, winning four matches, drawing five, and losing four.
