Bayer Leverkusen: Pursuing football immortality

The phenomenal run of new Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen dominating competitions without a loss only echoes similar feats in the past years.

The idea of a football club completing an entire season undefeated evokes memories of legendary teams such as Arsenal’s Invincibles, Juventus, Real Madrid, and Porto, all of whom have attained iconic status in this regard.

However, when we expand the scope to include all competitions, including European tournaments, no team perfectly fits this criterion. This sets the stage for Bayer Leverkusen’s pursuit of football immortality, as they aim to carve their name into the annals of the sport’s history.

Let’s delve deeper into Bayer Leverkusen’s quest for greatness and their potential to join the ranks of football’s most illustrious unbeaten teams.

While the discussion often turns to the legendary status of teams like Arsenal’s Invincibles or Porto’s remarkable 2010/11 season, both fell short in specific competitions along the way.

Ajax’s 1994/95 campaign comes close, winning the Eredivisie and lifting the UCL unbeaten, but a stumble in the Dutch cup against Feyenoord tarnished their record.

Similarly, Porto’s dominance in 2010/11 saw them sweep through the Portuguese league, cup, and Super Cup, alongside conquering the Europa League. Yet, defeats against Sevilla and Villareal marred their otherwise impeccable run.

Arsenal’s 2003/04 season is often cited, with the Gunners clinching the English Premier League undefeated. However, losses in the Community Shield to Manchester United and a semifinal exit from the FA Cup against the same opponents tainted an otherwise flawless league campaign.

However, the spotlight now shines on Bayer Leverkusen, defying all odds in a truly memorable season. Under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, they have remained undefeated throughout.

Should they maintain this streak in the remaining Bundesliga fixtures, secure victory in the DFB Pokal final against second-tier side Kaiserslautern, and clinch the Europa League title without a loss, they will etch their name in football folklore.
