Barcelona has announced the departure of 19-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Abdul Aziz Issah after his loan deal from Dreams FC came to an end.
Issah joined Barcelona’s B team, Barca Atletic, in September 2024 but struggled to secure game time, making only two appearances and accumulating just 26 minutes of playing time.
Despite being considered one of Ghana’s top young prospects and initially showing promise, including a training stint with the senior squad under Hansi Flick, Issah was largely left out of matchday squads. Barcelona has opted not to activate the purchase clause in his loan agreement, and he will return to Dreams FC along with six other players whose contracts are expiring.
Despite impressing in first-team training sessions under Hansi-Dieter Flick, Issah’s time at Barcelona has been underwhelming.
He played only 26 minutes in two matches for Barcelona Atletic, sparking speculation about his development and integration into the team.
Issah’s form at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he shone for Ghana, reignited discussions about his potential. However, it seems Barcelona’s technical team wasn’t convinced, as they’ve chosen not to exercise the buyout clause.
Although Issah’s stint with Barcelona may not have yielded the desired results, his European experience could still benefit his career.
At just 19, he remains an attractive prospect for European clubs, and his time at Barcelona may ultimately prove to be a stepping stone to greater opportunities.
Meanwhile, his Ghanaian compatriot David Oduru appears poised to get the nod to continue with the Catalan side, given the need to bolster their left-back position.
