What is Afrorave: Is Lasmid inventing a new Afrobeat genre?

Lasmid

On a Friday, it’s only fitting that we scoop ‘Friday Night’ hitmaker, Lasmid, as he gives an exclusive into his musical journey and his genre – Afrorave.

Lasmid is the latest and only Ghanaian musician to have claimed the new genre, Afrorave, after Rema of Nigerian and Toya Delazy from South Africa.

Per what we deciphered, Afrorave is a subset of Afrobeat, a term used to describe sounds from West Africa. And as Lasmid confirmed on TV3 NewDay, “Afro-raving. It’s a combination of Highlife, Hip-hop, hip-life… everything. It is versatile.”

Lasmid also spoke about his journey from school, participating in MTN Hitmaker and working whilst dreaming of music.

“My father wanted me to go to school, but I wasn’t interested in schooling. It was music all around me. Everything I did was music. I will be singing and writing when I’m working, and that’s where I saw PP Black and Nii Kotey. They told me I can do it.

“After Hitmaker (2019), I was groomed because I was signed to highly Spiritual music. And after 1 year, I release a song with Kofi Kinaata (Odo Brassband).”

Lasmid has songs with Mr Drew, Dead Peepol, Kuami Eugene and others.
And remember, it’s ‘Friday Night!’
