Ghana’s national Swimming Team captain, Abeiku Jackson, has made a historic mark by securing the nation’s first swimming medal at the ongoing 2023 African Games.

Jackson claimed a silver medal in the Men’s 50m Butterfly event with an impressive time of 24.23s, finishing closely behind Egypt’s Ali Khalafalla (23.93).

South Africa’s Hardin Eaton secured the third spot with a time of 24.42s. This achievement marks a significant improvement for Jackson, who had previously placed seventh in the Men’s 50m Butterfly at the 2019 African Games.

A holder of Ghanaian national records in 13 disciplines, spanning freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke events over distances ranging from 50 to 400 meters, Abeku Jackson’s success adds a new chapter to his illustrious career.

This silver medal contributes to Ghana’s growing tally at the 2023 African Games, with Winnifred Ntumi having previously scooped the first three medals in weightlifting.

As the host nation strives to ascend the rankings with victories in various disciplines, there is optimism about surpassing the 2019 performance, where Ghana secured two gold medals, two silver medals, and nine bronze medals, finishing in 15th place.

Abeiku Jackson’s achievement reflects the dedication and progress of Ghanaian athletes, setting the stage for continued success in the remainder of the African Games.
