US-based Ghanaian sports journalist Seidu Adamu has confirmed that he was assaulted on Saturday before the friendly match between Ghana and Mexico.

In his statement, Adamu affirmed the numerous reports of the attack that occurred at the Black Stars hotel in Charlotte. He specified that the attack was carried out by Black Stars security personnel, identifying his assailant as Aziz.

Adamu described the incident as unexpected and expressed uncertainty about whether it was a planned action by the top officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) or a reckless act by his attacker. Despite the assault, Adamu did not sustain major injuries but mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and arm, along with bruises around his ears.

The incident has prompted Adamu to reconsider his attendance at the upcoming match between the Black Stars and the US Men’s national team in Tennessee. He cited concerns about his safety, emphasizing that he did not provoke anyone or engage in actions that warranted such a violent response.

“Since the leadership of the Ghana FA cannot guarantee my safety in and around the national team, I have taken the hard decision to return to my base and not make the journey to Tennessee where the Black Stars are due to play the US Men’s national team.”

“I did not provoke anyone, neither did I say, act, or place myself in a situation that called for such Barbaric acts against me.”

“I initially reported the case with the Barclay Down Police Department in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will head to make similar reports in Maryland upon advice,” the statement added.

The incident has prompted widespread condemnation, and the GFA is yet to respond officially.
