Lionel Messi played a crucial role in securing a 2-0 victory for Inter Miami over Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer’s season opener on Wednesday.

The Argentina forward contributed to both goals, showcasing his influence on the pitch.

Messi’s involvement in the first goal came as he assisted Robert Taylor, with the midfielder’s shot finding the net in the first half, slipping under the Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Zac MacMath.

The 36-year-old star continued to shine as he played a part in the late second goal, scored by Diego Gomez, with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez registering an assist on his MLS debut.

Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino praised Messi’s performance, stating, “He looked loose, fine, and showed a lot of speed.” Messi’s contribution was particularly noteworthy as he missed the latter part of the previous season due to injury.

Despite his stellar performance in the MLS opener, Messi has faced criticism recently for missing a friendly in Hong Kong on February 5.

In response, the PSG forward released a video on social media site Weibo, explaining that an injury had led to his absence from the match.

The 2022 World Cup winner’s popularity in China is significant, and the backlash has led to the cancellation of two Argentina friendlies scheduled to take place in the country in March. The World Champions were set to face 2023 African champions Ivory Coast and runners-up Nigeria in March 2024.

Despite the off-field controversies, Messi’s on-field prowess remains evident as he makes a strong start in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami.

Following a not-so-impressive campaign in the previous season, the former Barcelona star is fired up to march the team to success.
