Asante Kotoko players delivered a poignant goal celebration during their Ghana Premier League match against Samartex at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Enock Morrison, who scored the decisive goal from a controversial penalty, demonstrated humility by dropping to his knees, signalling an apology to the fans for their team’s previous poor performances. His teammates joined him in this gesture of contrition.

Following the game, coach Prosper Ogum addressed the fans, expressing regret for the disappointment they had endured during the team’s recent winless streak.

He acknowledged the pain caused and emphasised the fans’ pivotal role in uplifting the team.

“We are grateful to our supporters for your support today,” he stated.

“Sorry for causing you a lot of pain and letting you down along the line but you are the same people who can bring us up.”

The frustration among fans reached a boiling point last Tuesday when some of them disrupted the team’s training session, forcing the coach to leave amid their anger.

However, the situation was defused after a meeting between the team and owner Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who offered his support to Ogum and urged the players to strive for improvement.

The team responded positively during their match against the league leaders, displaying resilience and determination to secure a much-needed win, thus breaking their streak of poor results. As a result, the Porcupine Warriors now find themselves five points clear of the relegation zone.

While the victory brought relief to Kotoko fans, controversy surrounded the penalty decision that led to the decisive goal, with replays suggesting the Kotoko player may have initiated the contact rather than being fouled.

Despite this, Samartex remain at the top of the league standings, maintaining a five-point lead as their closest rivals, Nations and Aduana FC, both suffered defeats on the road.
