I may consider ministerial role in Sports – Kwesi Nyantakyi

Kwesi Nyantakyi

Ex-Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed interest in taking up the role of Sports Minister should the New Patriotic Party retain power.

With barely eight months to go in the highly anticipated 2024 General elections, the NPP spearheaded by flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia aims to break the eight-year jinx of power since the emergence of the fourth republic.

They, however, face formidable opposition in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as well as other independent candidates.

Nyantakyi who recently declared his political ambitions to contest in the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu constituency is hopeful of victory and an eventual appointment as Sports Minister.

“If NPP comes and they make me a Sports Minister, I may consider it but if the NDC comes and they consider me, it will be difficult,” he told Onua TV.

The former football administrator is hopeful of becoming a lawmaker representing the Ejisu constituency following the demise of the incumbent John Kumah.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to commence nominations for the Ejisu primary today, Tuesday, April 7.

Mr. Nyantakyi has announced that delegates will be acquiring the forms on his behalf.

During his tenure as the head of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ghana achieved its first-ever qualification for the World Cup in 2006, marking a historic milestone. Additionally, there was a proactive Black Stars team that consistently contended in various Africa Cup of Nations competitions.

However, allegations of corruption, brought to light by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, abruptly ended Nyantakyi’s leadership as he resigned from all positions in both local and international football organizations.

Subsequently, he received a lifetime ban from football activities, which was later reduced to a 15-year suspension.

Nyantakyi has been embroiled in a succession of legal battles aimed at exonerating himself from the array of allegations leveled against him.
