Private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has sent forth words of apology to the Kumasi Traditional Council, asking for forgiveness ahead of the summons to appear before it following his outburst on the chiefs, which were deemed derogatory.

Mr. Ampaw said he would honour the invitation by the chiefs, which is slated for Monday, January 29, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

The traditional leaders summoned the outspoken lawyer to appear before it to substantiate his allegations that “some chiefs in the Ashanti Region are corrupt.”

In an interview with Joy FM on Monday, January 22, Maurice Ampaw stated that he is prepared to go “out of respect,” even though he is entitled to legal representation.

Lawyer Ampaw maintained his stance on the comments he made before the summons.

“I did it in the public interest. It is a matter of public interest. Everything that I said there, I am responsible. Chairman Wontumi is not responsible. If the Traditional Council deems it fit to invite me, they should provide better particulars,” he said.

“We are going to talk law, and no one is above the law. I will honour the invitation; you will clap for lawyer Ampaw on Monday. I am going with the truth. Otumfuo supports the truth, and I am going to lay bare the facts,” the staunch NPP sympathiser told Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on GhanAkoma.

But as the days went by, Mr. Ampaw seemed to have softened his stance and eaten a humble pie.

Mr. Ampaw, in a separate interview on Asempa FM yesterday [January 24], retracted his statement and called on the Kumasi Traditional Council to forgive him.

“I am using this platform to tell Nananom (chiefs) that if my utterances were extreme and they see it very offensive, I retract and apologise.

“I believe that let Asanteman move on, there is so much to do in the Ashanti Region and there is so much at stake in this political area and my love for Bawumia and NPP still stands,” the maverick TV host added.

The Ashanti regional chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi, is expected to appear before the Traditional Council with lawyer Maurice Ampaw. The controversial party chairman is also alleged to have made similar derogatory statements on the radio.

However, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed party members to desist from making any sensitive comments about the Manhyia Palace.
