Former Ghana midfielder, Sulley Muntari, says the decision by the Black Stars technical team to hand Kudus the captain’s armband in Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers was completely uncalled for as it added additional pressure on Ghana’s go-to guy.
Kudus was named captain of the Black Stars in October by head coach Otto Addo ahead of the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifying game against Sudan.
The decision by Otto Addo was made after captain of the team, Thomas Partey, had pulled out of the squad due to a medical issue.
Kudus went on to captain Ghana in the final game of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers as the Black Stars succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Niger in Accra.
In an exclusive interview with 3Sports, the former Ghana international, Sulley Muntari, described the decision as one which was hastily taken.
However, he acknowledged the leadership attribute and immense talent of Kudus.
“Kudus, no matter what, is going to be the captain of the national team one day,” he said.
“Let it be smooth for him, don’t just rush him. He doesn’t need the armband but he commands on the field. He carries the whole nation on his shoulder and he plays with us.
”So, what is your problem? You want to disturb him? I’m not saying you’ll worry him but let him be. Let him enjoy his football. Kudus has not yet seen his full potential. What we see is just a glimpse. Kudus is just amazing. As he continues to grow, he’ll be deadly,” he added.
Ghana will return to action – first time since missing out on the 2025 AFCON – in March for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
