Kwesi Appiah: I would be shocked if a Kotoko player left

Asante Kotoko’s Sporting Affairs Manager, Kwesi Appiah, has expressed surprise at the thought of any current player leaving the club, citing the excellent incentives and treatment they receive.

Player exodus has been a persistent issue in the Ghana Premier League, robbing fans of the league’s excitement as top performers often leave after standout seasons.

A recent example is Richmond Lamptey, who departed Kotoko to join Rwandan side APR FC on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract.

However, in an interview with Akoma FM, Kwesi Appiah shared his thoughts on the situation:

“I am not privy to any information regarding player departures, but I know that players may have their own reasons, and I will remain in the dark unless we are notified as club management of any player who intend to leave.”

He highlighted the unique benefits enjoyed by Kotoko players: “I believe that Kotoko players are currently receiving excellent care. As everyone is aware, Otumfuo gives them free housing, they don’t pay for utilities, they just pay a little portion of their earnings to be fed.”

“Again, this is a squad that occasionally receives salary payments on the 25th or 26th of each month. The following day, they receive bonuses for winning a game.”

Appiah emphasized that these incentives set Kotoko apart:

“I don’t think any team can match the incentives Kotoko offers their players, and I think we’re doing our best with the King’s assistance.”

He concluded by expressing his astonishment at the idea of any player leaving under such favourable conditions:

“Furthermore, unless there are additional reasons, I would be shocked if a player currently playing for Kotoko considered leaving.”
