Evicted Kwadaso onion traders refuse to relocate to new market

0

It’s been six days since the Kwadaso onion market was razed to the ground by the Ashanti Regional Security Council for redevelopment.

The traders were relocated to a market at Atwima Takyiman.

But affected traders have refused to occupy their new trading place.

They complained there were no engagements and feared facing another future eviction at the relocated market.

At a media briefing, the Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, reacted to concerns raised by the traders.

“We’ve engaged them for more than one year. We came out with a press release for them to relocate 6 months ago but some chiefs delayed the process. That is why on the 2nd of April the regional security council decided to release a final notice that they should relocate by before April 22, 2024”.

Asked whether the new market at Takyiman is a permanent place for the traders, Mr Osei-Mensah stated “the level of development will indicate whether their continously existence at where they’ve been relocated is needed or not”.

Though the demolished area has been fenced to prevent traders from accessing the area, some of them have found their way there doing brisk business whilst awaiting what their leadership will direct them to do.

Unhappy with the statement of the Regional Minister, the leadership of the onion traders said they’ve resolved to look for a suitable space and buy it for their trading activities to avoid future eviction.

“If he [the minister] cannot assure us of our permanent stay there, then they will just be relocating us as and when they wish so we are not going to the new market.

“We will find a place, buy it and build our market there. We will pay tax as expected of us but we will secure our place so that nobody will come and say they’re relocating us again”, Mohammed Muniru Ismail, an onion trader, noted.

Power outages negatively impacting businesses, tackle the problem immediately – GUTA

0

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has explained how the current power outages are affecting businesses negatively.

According to the union, the negative impact of the power outages on the entire economy is overwhelming as it affects every sphere of productivity from agriculture, trade to industry.

Manufacturers for instance are finding it difficult to maintain production schedules as well as plan for their workers due to the inconsistency in the power supply, which also adds cost to production and worsens the living conditions of the people, GUTA said.

Publication of a load shedding timetable can only be done by Energy Minister – Osafo-Maafo

A statement they issued said “Traders-Shop owners, Wholesalers, Tailors and Dressmakers, Electricians, Artisans, and all those who use electricity in their business are suffering a great setback as a result of this ‘Dumsor’ phenomenon, creating unbearable situation to businesses in the country.

“We demand to know the following from ECG:

1. What is/are the real cause of the erratic power outages in the country?

2. What efforts are being made to fix it?; and

3. At what timeline?

“ECG should also furnish Ghanaians with a timetable for the ‘dumsor’ to enable us plan our business activities. Also, due to the unpredictable power outages, most shop owners resort to the use of generators, where they buy and keep petrol for use of generators in the event of unexpected power outage. This is not only against the safety and security of our markets but also a dangerous practice necessitated by the ‘dumsor’ phenomenon, which needs to be fixed expeditiously.

Manchester United won’t compete for title next season – Ten Hag

0

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has openly admitted that his team is not yet at the level to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The former Ajax coach expressed doubt about their ability to compete for the top spot, suggesting instead that they may aim for a place in the top four.

Despite high expectations, Manchester United’s early exit from the Champions League group stages and a string of disappointing performances have intensified pressure on the 54-year-old coach. Fans and pundits alike have criticised him, with many calling for his dismissal.

Manchester United although have a final to play against Manchester City in the FA Cup final

A win against city rivals Manchester City can nonetheless propel the team in the right direction going into next season.

However, Ten Hag doesn’t believe next season is going to be any different. Speaking at a press conference the Manchester United manager has cast doubts on whether the team can challenge for the Premier League title. According to the manager, their only chance next season is to be part of the top four teams.

“When everyone is available, we’re competing for top 4. We’re not in the position to compete for number one or two,” he said.

He however was quick to point out the massive competition in the League, a situation which according to him makes it difficult to compete for the title

“There are some teams. It’s not anymore a two horse race or three-horse race in the Premier League. There is Villa, there is Spurs, there is Newcastle. So many good teams. There are six, or seven teams. All can compete. Chelsea. Don’t forget them. They are all competing for the top four and we are one of them. But we are not, at this moment, in this position to compete for number one or two,” he added.

Manchester United will come up against relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday and Ten Hag would hope, the road to redemption will begin from there.

GUTA calls for ‘Dumsor’ timetable

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has called for a swift and decisive resolution of the ongoing power outages in the country.

Mohammed Kudus stars as Hammers dampen Reds title ambition

0

Mohammed Kudus showcased his playmaking prowess once again in West Ham United’s recent clash with Liverpool, notching his fifth Premier League assist of the season.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 43rd minute when Kudus delivered a precise cross, setting up Jarrod Bowen’s header to break the deadlock and put the Hammers in front.

In a thrilling encounter at the London Stadium, Kudus continued to shine, providing the assist for Jarrod Bowen’s milestone 20th goal of the campaign, ensuring the match ended in a 2-2 draw between West Ham and Liverpool.

The result has further dashed the hopes of Liverpool in the title race who now sit third in the table, trailing leaders Arsenal by two points with three games remaining.

The contribution of the Black Stars attacker extends beyond assists, with the midfielder having been directly involved in 12 league goals this season, scoring seven and setting up five.

An intriguing statistic to note is that three of Kudus’ five assists have been for Jarrod Bowen, highlighting their on-field chemistry and effectiveness as a duo.

Under the guidance of manager David Moyes, Kudus has showcased his versatility by excelling in various attacking positions for West Ham, demonstrating adaptability and resilience in his debut Premier League season.

As Kudus continues to impress, his influence on West Ham’s attacking play grows, cementing his status as a key figure in the team’s quest for success.

On the international stage, Ghanaians will hope to continue seeing more of the exploits of the 23-year-old as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approach.

Ghana will face Mali and the Central African Republic in their third and fourth round of matches as they aim to make it to their fifth World Cup.

Nico Williams responds to racist attacks with goal vs. Atletico Madrid

0

Nico Williams grabbed a goal for Athletic Bilbao in their 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday night, after being racially abused by the fans at the Wanda Metropolitano during the game.

Rodrigo De Paul grabbed the opener for the hosts on the day, then the match officials stopped the game for two minutes due to racist chants from Atletico Madrid fans towards Nico Williams in the first half, with anti-racist messages announced over the stadium.

Minutes later, the 21-year-old grabbed the equaliser for Bilbao on the night and pointed to his skin colour in front of Atletico fans, silencing the Wanda Metropolitano before the end of the first half.

Atletico Madrid however managed to bounce back strong in the second 45 minutes with a goal from Angel Correa, with an own goal from Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon, ending the game in a 3-1 win.

Nico Williams, like Vinicius Jr, now joins a list of players who have suffered racist abuse in Europe, particularly in La Liga and at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Williams now has 11 goal contributions to his name in La Liga, (three goals and eight assists), and has a huge summer ahead of him, as a move away from Bilbao looks more realistic by the day.

Joe Lartey: Recounting the memories of an iconic commentator

0

On Friday, April 26, 2024, Joachim Awuley Lartey, affectionately known as Joe Lartey, a distinguished African football commentator and Ghanaian journalist, passed away at the age of 96.

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) announced his demise, marking the end of an era in sports journalism.

Born on June 6, 1927, in Accra, during the era of the Gold Coast, Lartey’s life intersected with significant moments in football history long before Ghana gained independence. His journey was characterized by a deep involvement in football and a talent for storytelling.

Lartey received his education at Accra Academy, notably at Wolsley Hall. Later, at the age of 16, he ventured into the military before eventually transitioning to become a prominent figure in the realm of journalism, particularly as a key member of the press covering sports for decades. His contributions to the field of sports journalism have left an indelible mark on Ghanaian and African football history.

Between the years 1960 and 1990, Joe Lartey played an active role in the media landscape, particularly as a prominent member of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) Sports department for 13 years.

During his tenure at GBC, Lartey became renowned for his distinctive commentary style, which included his famous phrase, “Over to you.” This catchphrase became synonymous with Lartey himself, often eclipsing his own name in recognition and association. Lartey’s impactful contributions to sports broadcasting and his iconic phrase have solidified his legacy as one of the most celebrated figures in Ghanaian media history.

He worked there from 1961 to 1973, before switching to the continental level with Federal Radio in Nigeria between 1978 and 1990. He then returned to GBC after 1990 and became the first president of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), which still awards and inspires Sports Journalists and personalities to date.

With the GBC, initially, I wasn’t going to be with the sports department. My boss was Mr Addai. He was a very good commentator. He had a very good voice. He saw what I could do. So anytime there was a commentary, sports and ceremonial, I shared the commentary with him. He would ask me to start, tell people about the say and he would take over. I’ll say over to you and then when he finished his say he would say over to you Joe and we covered a number of interesting commentaries and that’s how the name came about”, he revealed to Joy Sports.

He also made commentaries on ceremonial duties in Ghana back in the 1960s. Like the arrival of Queen Elizabeth II from Great Britain, and his ability to tell stories in a concise manner, made him remembered as he stood tall amongst many others in his time.

Lartey also spoke to an iconic memory when Real Madrid played a 3-3 draw with the BlackStars in 1962, believing that to be a truly competitive game and a memorable day.

Yes, I was. I was with my boss Festus Addai. That match took place at the stadium on a Saturday and you should have been there to see”, he said.

Lartey’s career was a blend of excitement and professionalism as he is one of the few people who witnessed Ghana lift its first Africa Cup of Nations trophies.

All of that was under Ohene Djan. Planning and he was a bit dictatorial. Yet sometimes, dictatorship can achieve things. The players who were featuring, CK Gyamfi. I don’t hear his name anymore but he was a wonderful footballer. Everything was deliberate. Kwame Nkrumah had the virtue of combining sports with unity and the team enjoyed many successes”.

While Ghanaian football may not currently match the greatness it achieved between 1960 and 1990, Joe Lartey, through his storytelling and coverage of the team’s exploits, would have hoped for Ghana to rediscover its footballing prowess.

Though Joe Lartey has passed away, his legacy endures among those he influenced and entertained throughout his life. May his soul rest in eternal peace, as his memory continues to resonate with many.

Did Klopp jinx his Liverpool farewell?

0

This was not how anyone including fans of Liverpool envisaged what is essentially Jurgen Klopp’s goodbye tour.

When the German announced he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season, many Liverpool fans hoped that they would send him off in grand style.

The talks of a farewell tour grew so intense that Liverpool even started filming the second half of the season for a documentary.

And when they beat Chelsea 1-0 to win the Carabao Cup, the stars seemed aligned, or so they thought.

There were even talks of a quadruple. But it’s all evaporated since.

In March, with all odds in their favour, they were knocked out by an out-of-form Manchester United from the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage bringing their quadruple hopes to an end.

There was still hope for a treble though, with the Premier League and Europa League in sight.

But when everyone felt they were favourites, Atalanta showed up at Anfield and inflicted a 3-0 defeat and put their Europa League journey win in jeopardy. This was their first defeat throughout the season and for it to come at such a crucial one was extremely disappointing.

Even at 3-0, there were high hopes from fans who were hoping for another remontanda just like against Barcelona at Anfield. However, Mohammed Salah’s early first-half goal was all Liverpool could muster as Atalanta held on to dump them out of the Europa League.

Klopp’s second defeat in 19 Meyserside derbies on Wednesday night has all but killed off any Premier League hopes for Liverpool who now find themselves three and two points behind Arsenal and Manchester City respectively. In context, winning the league does not depend on them now, they would now have to hope for other results to go their way.

On what could have been a farewell tour for Klopp and his boys, they would now be playing catch up and hope they are able to win the ultimate to at least give Klopp the farewell he deserves.

Klopp’s departure from Liverpool will leave him with eight trophies, having secured victory in six out of 10 major finals, notably clinching the Champions League trophy in 2019. However, he will undoubtedly ponder what might have transpired this season.

Ghana without key names as Penn Relays loom

0

Ghana’s 4x100m relay team will ran at the Penn Relays later tonight in the United States of America.

The team will be looking to run a good time or essentially rack up a few more points to better their ranking and increase their chances or qualification to the Olympic Games in Paris.

The relay team is without Ghana’s record holder, Benjamin Azamati – who has been a member of the relay team since 2019. The team will also miss the services of Edwin Gadayi and Solomon Hammond who were part of the team that won silver at the African Games in Accra in March.

In their places, the team has welcomed Ibrahim Fuseini who finished 4th in the men’s 200m final at the Africa Games, Joseph Oduro Manu and Barnabas Aggerh who came in 6th place in the men’s 100m. The only member of the team from the African Games to make it to this competition is Joseph Paul Amoah

Ghana has been put in the same running group as Jamaica and will need extra efforts to defeat the athletic powerhouse.

Ghana’s race at the Penn Relays begins at 6:44 pm.
