Police stop ‘Friends of Adams Mahama’ from holding press confab

0
Police in the Upper East Region have stopped a group calling itself ‘Friends of Adams Mahama’ from holding a press conference in Bolgatanga.

The group had scheduled to meet journalists on Wednesday, June 3 to announce restrictions on some persons from attending the final funeral rites – Adua – for the late Upper East Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Alhaji Adams Mahama died of acid wounds on Thursday, May 21 after he was attacked by two members of his party the night before.

He was buried on Saturday, May 23 but a final funeral rite is scheduled to be held on Sunday, June 7.

It is expected to attract the crème de la crème of the largest opposition party.

According to ‘Friends of Mahama’, some persons had a hand in the acid attack on the late Mahama; therefore, the press conference was to keep them away from the funeral grounds on Sunday.

But the police indicated that the group had not informed them of the meeting and so had prevailed on them to reschedule it.

They also adduced that the meeting could stir the already tensed capital given the circumstances that led to Alhaji Mahama’s death.

0
The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) is currently printing the notices of poll as well as ballot papers for the June 13 nationwide parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a statement has said.

Signed by NPP’s General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, the statement said preparations for the primaries are far advanced.

“All are to note that no decision has been made to postpone the primaries.”

However, some constituencies will have their elections postponed following requests from executives.

Bia East, Bia West, Juaboso and Akontombra, all in the Western Region, as well as Nadowli-Kaleo and Nkwanta South in the Upper East and Volta regions respectively are among constituencies whose elections have been postponed.

“Parliamentary Primaries in the Klottey Korle, Obom-Domeabra and Akrofuom Constituencies have been put on hold, pending the determination of cases referred to the National Appeals Committee,” the statement on Wednesday, June 3 said.

The June 13 primaries will be the end of the opposition party’s reorganization process – which began in 2013 – towards the 2016 presidential elections.

How is that disrespectful? – Hannah Tetteh asks Rawlings

0
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hannah Tetteh, has in a rather soft tone downplayed suggestions by former President Rawlings that she exhibited a disrespectful act by walking out of a public event in Accra on Monday.

Mr. Rawlings in his usual angry reactions alleged that Mrs. Tetteh walked out of a three-day conference of World Mayors after she was told that the Vice-President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, would be replacing her as the person to deliver a speech on behalf of President John Mahama.

Mr. Rawlings said: “I was told that the President was not coming to the start of the Conference. Instead he had delegated the Foreign Minister to come and represent him. So I said, he can’t do that.  We have the Vice President here. Protocol is such that if  [President Mahama] cannot do it he should ask his vice president to come and open the conference, not his foreign minister. I tried to call the President and he called back and I told him that we have a Vice-President on the ground and he cannot send his foreign minister [to represent him]. He probably wasn’t told that the Vice President was [here], and he said sorry.

“The President sends his Vice-President to order the thing to start and we have to wait for him. She doesn’t even have the patience to wait and sit and join the meeting. She packs up and go because she can’t open it.

According to the former President, Mrs. Tetteh’s conduct was “disrespectful.”

“Humility is very important when you hold office. It’s not everything that the President does agree with or that I like. But you cannot take away from him, his humble way of doing things, his likable nature. I’m afraid some of the characters around him have a problem,” President Rawlings said.  This sort of disrespect is not acceptable,” he said.
However, in a statement issued by an aide and attributed to the Foreign Minister, Mrs. Tetteh gave a version of events that conflicted with Mr. Rawlings’ account.

Explaining  the circumstances that led her to leave the conference early, the Foreign Minister said that she got a call at about 9:45 am from President John Mahama’s secretary Monday asking her to represent the later at the opening of the three-day 4th World Summit of Mayors and leaders of African Descent conference.

She said she agreed and asked that the speech be emailed to her.

Mrs. Tetteh said whereas the secretary told her that the event would begin at 10:30am, she received a call from her protocol officer that time had been moved forward to 10:00am.

She said at the same time, the Mayor of Accra, Mr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye, had  indicated to her that they were expecting the Vice-President, Mr. Kwasi Amissah-Arthur to open event.

She said when the Mayor failed to get in touch with the Vice-President’s protocol officers, he reached out, asking her to come quickly and deliver the President’s speech, as the programme was about to begin.

Mrs. Tetteh said: I rushed to the Conference Centre to be told by the Mayor that he had spoken to the President and the VP was coming. My response was that if that was the cased then there was no need for me to be there. I decided to sit [and] wait to see if the VP would come because my understanding was that I was to stand in and give the President’s speech and I thought it wasn’t a good idea to leave and be called back. I was sitting on the other side of the room from JJ [Jerry Rawlings].

“As soon as the VP arrived he went to JJ to greet him [and] other dignitaries (who I had also greeted when I got there), they were chatting so I slipped out of the other door and left to go to Cabinet. Admittedly I didn’t tell all the people I had previously greeted that I was leaving, but I felt it wasn’t really necessary to announce my departure and explaining to everyone the reason why, as the program was already running very late [and] I was sure the focus would be on getting started. Now how is that disrespectful?”

The three-day conference was attended by over 3,000 delegates made up of mayors, city authorities and leaders from Africa and Africans in the Diaspora to forge alliance and partnership to promote the development of Africa and people in the diaspora.

Kwabena Agyapong’s office not ransacked – NPP

0
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied reports making rounds on social media that the office of its General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, was ransacked on Monday, June 1.

“Reports that the General Secretary’s office was ransacked yesterday, for which pictures are currently being circulated on several social media platforms, are totally and completely false,” a release issued on Tuesday, June 2 by Communications Director Nana Akomea stressed.

It said the pictures are those of the office of the secretary to Mr Agyepong.

According to Mr Akomea the office received some levels of vandalism on Thursday, May 21 when news of the late Upper East Region Chairman Adams Mahama reached Accra.

“This unfortunate incident occurred at a time when emotions at the headquarters had reached fever pitch.

“The act is indeed regrettable, and all steps to ensure that the perpetrators of this cowardly act are identified and punished are being undertaken.”

It is unclear who shared the pictures and for what purpose those pictures were shared. It comes after a resignation letter purported to have been written by Mr Agyepong also reached some media firms. He vehemently denied ever writing such letter.

Leader of the party Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for cease fire in exchanges between the General Secretary and the National Chairman on one hand and some senior party members especially regional chairmen on the other hand.

Afoko, Agyapong assured of safety by Upper East NPP

0
The Upper East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Cletus Ayambere has stated that the National Chairman and General Secretary of the party Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong are welcome to the region to hold any party activity meant to ensure victory for the party in 2016.

He said the party in the region were pleased with Nana Akufo-Addo’s assurance to hold President Mahama to his promise to ensure justice for the late Adams Mahama.

“Once the presidential candidate has directed that the National Chairman and General Secretary be allowed to come to the headquarters to do their work without hindrance, no one will hinder them from working in the Upper East region too. Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong will be welcomed to the region any time”, Mr Ayambere said.

According to him, the death of the party’s Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama has negatively affected the party in the region, adding that if the perpetrators are not prosecuted according to the laws of the country, the pain in the hearts of the family and the members and supporters of the party would worsen and affect their contributions to the party.

Mr. Ayambe disclosed this to Daily Guide newspaper after a press conference held by the flagbearer at the party’s National Headquarters, Friday.

He explained that the call for truce by the party’s flagbearer has come at the right time and that he hopes all members and supporters of the party in the region would put the recent happenings in the party behind them and work hard to ensure victory in 2016 to honour the late party official.

Following the death of the regional chairman, Daily Guide has learnt that some five regional executives of the party run out of the town to avoid reprisal attacks by some party youth who allegedly threatened to kill them.

They include regional party organizer, Jerry Asamni, regional youth organizer, Bashiru Ibrahim, the Nasara Coordinator, Mba Siita, 2nd Vice Chairman Osman Kunkunaba and Women’s Organizer, Florence Sampokabila.
