Kylian Mbappe’s late penalty denied Newcastle a remarkable victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the 1-1 draw, the visitors remain in contention for a place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Aleksander Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle in the first half, capitalising on Miguel Almiron’s effort that was pushed into his path. The Magpies then put up a valiant defensive effort, with Nick Pope making a spectacular save from point-blank range to thwart Bradley Barcola and then Mbappe, who narrowly missed the target with the rebound.

However, Newcastle’s resistance was eventually breached deep into stoppage time when Tino Livramento was judged to have handled the ball, resulting in a penalty for PSG. Mbappe stepped up and converted the spot kick, rescuing a point for the hosts.

The outcome leaves Newcastle in third position in Group F, trailing second-placed PSG by two points. To advance to the next round, Eddie Howe’s men must defeat AC Milan in their final group fixture and rely on Borussia Dortmund, who have already secured qualification, to overcome PSG. It promises to be an exciting conclusion to the group stage.
