Hearts of Oak have won their first Ghana Premier League title in 12 years after drawing 1-1 with Liberty Professionals in a local derby on Sunday.

A delightful cross by Raddy Ovouka was headed home by Daniel Afriyie, who beat his marker at the near post, to give Hearts the lead but Liberty equalized at the death.

The draw was enough because their close rivals Asante Kotoko were beaten 2-1 by Bechem United at the Nana Gyeabour Park.

The title is Samuel Boadu’s first in his coaching career. He switched to Hearts in the middle of the season from Medeama, where he did not win any trophy in four years. He can add MTN FA Cup as the Phobians have reached the quarter-final stage.

Hearts could get a guard of honour in Sogakope when they face WAFA in their final league game of the season.

As league champions, Hearts of Oak will pocket 250,000 Ghana cedis.
