Two first half goals ensured Hearts of Oak beat Berekum Chelsea in Accra on Sunday and now have a two-point lead at the summit of the Ghana Premier League.

Benjamin Afutu headed home the opener in the 9th minute and 20 minutes later Kwadwo Obeng Jr doubled the Phobians advantage, much to the delight to their fans who arrived at the Accra Sports Stadium with high hopes.

Kotoko’s draw in Dormaa against Aduana Stars presented Hearts with an opportunity to extend their lead and they made no mistake.

They were the better side from the start to the last minute of the game. Samuel Boadu deployed a tactic that worked to perfection as Hearts, with seven games to go, are beginning to believe this is their year.

As one of Ghana’s most successful clubs, Hearts are desperate to end their embarrassing title drought. They haven’t been champions of Ghana since 2009.

Earlier in the day, Inter Allies pummeled Medeama 3-0. A result that has left the top hierarchy of the Takwa-based club contemplating sacking Yaw Preko and his assistant Yaw Acheampong as their title aspirations continue to fade.

Elsewhere in Obuasi, another upset was recorded as Legon Cities beat AshantiGold 1-0. The victory moves the Royals further away from the drop zone.

Bechem United and Elmina Sharks shared the spoils, WAFA beat Ebusua Dwarfs 2-1 in Sogakope and King Faisal lost to Eleven Wonders in Techiman.
