Former Lyon midfielder Michael Essien is pleased to see his countryman Ernest Nuamah join the club following the official announcement on Wednesday.

The Ghanaian youngster completed the move to the French outfit from FC Nordsjaelland following a series of negotiations which saw him initially move to Belgian side RWD Molenbeek before joining the former Ligue 1 champions with an obligation to buy.

Due to transfer, the 19-year-old has become the fourth Ghanaian to have played fo Lyon following in the footsteps of Abedi Ayew (Pele), John Mensah, and Michael Essien.

“Finally, he is from Lyon, Come on Olympique Lyon. Come on Ernest Nuamah
Good luck my little one,” the former Black Stars midfielder wrote on Twitter.

Essien, who played for Lyon from 2003 to 2005, is interestingly a big fan of the young player he praised when their paths met at FC Nordsjaelland when Essien was an assistant coach.

Given his early successes in the Danish League in the previous seasons, Nuamah, like the other Ghanaian players who thrived for Lyon before making bigger moves, is looking to follow in the footsteps of his countrymen.

The youngster has already gained national recognition starring for the Black Meteors in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as well as the actual tournament which was held in Morocco earlier this year.

Nuamah also impressed on his senior Ghana debut climbing off the bench to put up a brilliant performance in Ghana’s stalemate with Madagascar in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in June.

He is also included on the list of 100 nominees for the 2023 Golden Ball Award.
