Former Asante Kotoko star Wilberforce Mfum has raised concerns about the quality of players currently at the club, attributing their poor performance to the coach Prosper Ogum’s decision to sign lower-tier players.

In the wake of Kotoko’s recent disappointing run, which has seen them drop to ninth place in the Ghana Premier League standings, fans have voiced their dissatisfaction.

The club’s dismal performance hit a low point with their recent defeat against Nations FC, marking their fourth consecutive loss in the league and matching an unwanted 14-year-old record.

Mfum, an Africa Cup of Nations winner in 1963, directed his criticism towards Coach Ogum for his recruitment strategy, stating that the club deserves top-class players who can attract fans to the stadium.

Expressing his dismay in an interview with Akoma FM, Mfum questioned the decision to give the coach extensive power in player recruitment, suggesting that Kotoko’s current roster lacks the caliber needed for success.

“That is not right. If I held any capacity in the team, I wouldn’t have agreed to this decision of the IMC. How can you lose five matches and still be at the helm of Kotoko?” he quizzed on Akoma FM.

“Otumfuo’s name can’t be disgraced to this level,” Mfum remarked. “Why was he (Ogum) given so much power to purchase players singlehandedly? Kotoko deserves top-class players who can fill the stadium with supporters, not lower-division players like we currently have.”

Mfum, who played for Kotoko from 1962 to 1967, called for Ogum’s immediate dismissal in light of the team’s poor results, urging the club’s management to take decisive action.

Despite mounting pressure from supporters for Ogum’s removal, the club’s management has expressed confidence in the coach’s ability to turn the team’s fortunes around.

However, Mfum stressed the importance of immediate improvement, emphasising the need for Kotoko to win back the support of fans and regain the respect of club legends.

With their next league fixture against Bechem United looming, Ogum and his squad will be under pressure to deliver a positive result and restore confidence among stakeholders.

Sitting ninth on the Ghana Premier League table, Kotoko faces a pivotal moment in their season, with Ogum tasked with the challenge of reversing their fortunes and winning back the trust of the fans.
