Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has spoken out against recent criticism questioning his commitment to the club.

In a piece for The Players’ Tribune, the 26-year-old addressed concerns about his attitude and off-field activities, urging critics to show “more humanity.”

Rashford emphasised his deep connection to the club, having joined the youth ranks and made his first-team debut at the age of 18 in 2016.

The England international expressed the significance of his association with United, stating that it’s like questioning his entire identity.

“If you ever question my commitment to United, that’s when I have to speak up,” the England forward said.

“It’s like somebody questioning my entire identity, and everything I stand for as a man.

“I grew up here. I have played for this club since I was a boy. My family turned down life-changing money when I was a kid so I could wear this badge,” Rashford wrote.

The footballer acknowledged that he can handle criticism from various sources but drew the line when it comes to questioning his commitment and bringing his family into the discussion. Rashford called for a more humane approach to the scrutiny he faces.

Criticism has been directed at Rashford’s work rate on the pitch and his off-field conduct. Reports in January suggested he was seen in Belfast nightspots before missing training due to illness and sitting out the FA Cup match against Newport. Additionally, he faced disciplinary measures for being late to a team meeting and celebrating his birthday after a defeat to Manchester City.

Rashford suggested a different tone in media coverage, attributing it in part to his high-profile child food poverty campaign that led to a government U-turn in 2020. He expressed a sense that there is a waiting game for him to have a “human moment” so that critics can point fingers and question his character.

“I’m not a perfect person. When I make a mistake, I’ll be the first one to put my hand up and say that I need to do better,” Rashford concluded.

Manchester United, currently in sixth place in the Premier League, face a crucial match against rivals Manchester City this weekend.
