Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan backs the appointment of former teammate John Paintsil as the second assistant coach of the senior national team.

Paintsil, 42, earned his debut for the Black Stars in 2001 and retired from the team in 2013 with a total of 91 appearances, only four other players recorded more caps.

He also featured for West Ham United, Fulham and Leicester City among others. After retirement, he served as an assistant coach to Kaizer Chiefs.

Earlier in March, the former Liberty Professionals star was appointed assistant coach to Otto Addo, alongside fellow international Fatau Dauda and Joseph Lauman.

‘‘John (Paintsil) sacrificed a lot for the national team but people seem to forget. After retirement, he went to coach in South Africa as an assistant and gathered relevant experience,’’ Gyan said on Asempa FM.

‘‘If you look at his life after retirement, all he he’s done is coach. So if I look at his records and what he has done, I can only support his appointment to the assistant’s role,’’ Gyan added.

Paintsil shared the Black Stars dressing room with Gyan from 2003 to 2013.
