Sports Ministry working closely with GFA to appoint new Black Stars coach soon

Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif has revealed that he is collaborating with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to find a new coach for the Black Stars as quickly as possible.

Since Otto Addo’s departure in December, Ghana’s senior national team has been without a coach. The former Black Stars player stepped down following Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Uruguay in their last group game of the 2022 World Cup, which resulted in the Black Stars’ elimination from the competition.

The GFA since then have received a number of applications for the role.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, the Sports minister assured Ghanaians of a new appointment in the coming days as he continues to work hand in hand with the GFA to fill the void.

“The Ghana Football Association is in the process of hiring a new coach and I have personally engaged them and they have indicated that a final report will be submitted to the Ministry possibly this week or next week,” said the minister.

“I know we have an assignment in March this year and we need to have a new head coach, so he can start preparing for the AFCON qualifiers.

“The country should be assured that the GFA is working to ensure that we get a replacement.”

Recent reports suggest that former premier league coach and Black Stars technical advisor Chris Hughton has shown interest in taking over the team.

The new coach, once appointed is expected to lead Ghana through the qualifiers for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Ghana will be in action against Angola for the AFCON qualifiers in March 2022.
