Multiple award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter, David Adeleke, popular known as Davido has appreciated the introduction of the new Grammys’ category, the Best African Music Performance.

Davido in an interview with France 24 on January 30 said “God’s timing is the best” when questioned about his views on the introduction of the new Grammys category.

“God’s timing is the best. African music has been dominant for years. So if you’re asking me if we should have gotten recognition since, yeah, definitely. But things take time. As I said, God’s timing is the best,” he responded.

The ‘Feel’ hitmaker further emphasised that the global recognition for African music has been long overdue despite its longstanding dominance, noting that they are now gaining global recognition.

“I am really happy about this new category, not just for myself but my fellow nominees. It’s very beautiful given that people back home can make African music and win a Grammy. That’s really amazing to see. So I would say God’s timing, I wouldn’t say late,”

The African artiste has received his first nomination for the prestigious worldwide awards. He earned three nominations in three categories for the 2024 Grammy Awards.

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. the newly introduced category forms part of a larger set of updates and amendments aimed at making the awards process “more fair, transparent and accurate.”

His ‘Feel’ song has been nominated for Best Global Music Performance, ‘Unavailable’ is up for Best African Music Performance and his 2023 album ‘Timeless’ is nominated for Best Global Music Album.

OtherAfrican artistes joining Davido on the nomination list are Burna Boy, Ayra Starr as well as South Africa’s Tyla.

Burna Boy scored four nods for Best Melodic Rap Performance, Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance and Best African Music Performance. Fellow Nigerian singer Davido secured three nods.
