The results from the recent internal elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) especially in the Ashanti Region, show that the party and its potential flagbearer for the 2024 elections John Dramani Mahama do not regard Ashantis in the party, a Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ernest Owusu-Bempah has said.
He indicated that the number of Ashantis who won positions in the region is not up to 5 per cent.
“The NDC continues to treat Ashantis in the party, especially, those in the region, with trash. It seems they don’t see their worth in the party.
“Take a look at the just-held regional executive elections, one is left with the notion that the opposition party does not see anything good in the Ashantis in the party,” he said in a statement on Monday November 21.
He stated that Kweku Afrifa Yamaoh-Ponko, “an ardent critic of this administration, a communicator and a true fighter for the party, went into the elections and got 15, placing 8th in the race.
“Kwaku Asafo-Agyei contested with Abass Nurudeen and Asafo-Agyei was beaten mercilessly. Take a look at their organizer and deputy organizer, they are all non-Ashantis even though some Ashantis contested in the race.
“Asafo-Agyei and Afrifa Yamoah Ponko merited the positions they vied for looking at how hard they have been working for the NDC in the region.
“The number of Ashantis who won positions in the region would not exceed 5%, a region dominated by Ashantis.”
“Was any Ashanti elected in any position in the other regions? No way, not even one. Why must NDC in Ashanti be occupied by people from other regions outside Ashanti?
“If you are an Ashanti in the Ashanti Region and still support the NDC, then you need to reconsider your support for the party. Why must people not Ashantis lead the party in the Ashanti Region?
“What cannot happen in other regions should not happen in the Ashanti Region. Wofa Yamoah and his crew are toiling in vain. They are not trusted. They are not recognized! They are not seen as loyal members of the NDC because of their Ashanti roots.
“What is fair is fair and what is unfair has to be stated. Any objective-minded person would agree with me that the kind of treatment meted to Ashantis in the NDC in the region is not the best. The NDC simply doesn’t like Ashantis.”
