New fares from GPRTU ‘within this week’

The new fares are likely to take effect June 1[/caption] The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) says it has reached the final stages of negotiation with stakeholders to have new transport fares applied nationwide. National Vice President Robert Sarbah told TV3’s Afua Tieku on Midday Live on Monday, “I believe within this week, we should be able to do that.” There were reports on Monday that fares have been increased. The reports stemmed from  a joint statement by True Drivers Union and Concerned Drivers Association. The statement announced a 10 per cent increment in fares effective Monday, May 28. Mr Sarbah, however, sharply rejected what was contained in the statement, saying the groups are not part of stakeholders at the negotiation table. He explained that negotiations are done by GPRTU, Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) as well as the Ministry of Transport. “It is appropriate to get the Ministry of Transport for confirmation,” he stated, insinuating that the groups which announced the increased fares o Monday have not done that. “We do so in unison.” He said they are almost done and the new fares will definitely take effect on June 1. “We will come out very soon.” By Emmanuel Kwame Amoh|3news.com|Ghana Follow @kwame_amoh]]>
