The vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party is reported to have suggested that the presidency is skewed in favour of Christians notwithstanding the fact that the country is a circular State.
Addressing Muslim supporters in the Sisala West District, he urged them to vote for him because he is a Muslim, saying “We are in this country living peacefully and nicely; Christians and Muslims. So we believe in the NPP that Christians and Muslims should work together and that is why whenever we pick a flagbearer as a Christian, we pick a Muslim as a vice.
“And when we come and pick a Muslim as a flagbearer, we will pick a Christian as a vice. So if, Insha Allah, Nana Akufo-Addo becomes president, he will swear with the Bible and enter the Flagstaff and I will swear with the Quran and enter the flagstaff House,” Dr. Bawumia added.
But his statement has since been widely condemned by many, including the NDC Youth Organiser who has asked him to retract because it is divisive and has the tendency to incite people into a religious war.
“This is unfortunate and must be condemned in no uncertain terms, how can a learned Dr Bawumia and someone seeking to lead this country speak that way. His comment was not only divisive but potential of throwing this country into religious war; he wants to destroy Ghana but he will not succeed” Musah said.
He told host of Ghana Dadwen, Bright Kwesi Asempa on Onua FM Tuesday that it is abhorrent for anyone seeking the mandate of Ghanaians to try to play the religious card to win elections.
“Can I ask Dr. Bawumia what President Kufour and Alhaji Aliu Mahama-led administration did to Muslims, have we all not witnessed the struggle and humiliation that our mothers and fathers went through during their Hajj pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Mecca” he claimed.
He thus called on the NPP and Ghanaians, including the clergy and all religious leaders to mount pressure on Dr Bawumia to retract his statement and apologize, noting “if this country will go into flames, it will be because of speeches like that of Dr Bawumia. We have elections in November, and this is not time for these divisive and sectarian comments”
