The intended strike action-cum-demonstration by members of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) on their resistance to the Electronic Transactions Levy has been suspended.
According to the Association, they considered circumstances in the country as Ghanaians to take that decision.
The Association had scheduled the demonstration for Thursday, December 23 with a concomitant nationwide strike action.
But a communique issued on Wednesday, December 22 said: “We know that our members are very resolute and poised to get on the streets to fight in protection of their businesses but we cannot do away with the fact that we are Ghanaian and must be concerned about how we intend to make this strike/demonstration happen.”
It cited Parliament’s recess, challenges with police personnel protection as well as a recent meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation and National Communications Authority (NCA) as compelling reasons to suspend the strike.
For Parliament, the Association said Members (MPs) were supposed to receive their petition but going on break meant no body will be available to receive the petition.
“Also the police have a challenge protecting us and the general public due to their schedule for Christmas and its related issues.”
The Ministry and NCA, in their case, have met the Association and “accepted to receive a proposal for further deliberations and a possible consideration”.
“If all these prove futile then the demonstration/strike is inevitable.”
