The General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has blamed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for the chaos that characterized Parliament last Monday.
Nana Yaa Jantuah said the excuse that the Speaker was sick and, for that matter, could not sit during the Parliamentary sitting which resulted in the chaos was a clear indication that the health system of Ghana is weak.
The CPP scribe made the observations in an interview on 3FM’s Sunrise with Helen Appiah Ampofo.
“How can the Speaker be sick at that moment?…He just went on a medical leave in Dubai. If the state has paid money for his medical leave to Dubai and he is not well, then it means the treatment was not well done”.
She stressed that “we have wasted our money and we need more transparency”.
“If the Speaker is sick after a medical leave to Dubai, then he should have gone to the University of Ghana Medical Hospital and not Dubai.”
Madam Jantuah explained that “[the leaders] should stay in the country when they are sick”.
“I don’t know why when they are sick they go outside for treatments. For what? If the medical system in Ghana is good, why should they go out for treatments?”
Chaos in Parliament
Reacting to the chaos, Madam Jantuah explained that “it is an aberration to democracy. It is a disgrace. They behaved as if they were children fighting over breast milk”.
“The behaviour of Parliament is very obnoxious. It is wasteful. How can you perpetrate violence in Parliament when all your constituents are watching?”
She noted that “the people who were watching will think that it is nice to perpetrate violence”.
“Is it a wrestling match? Or now Parliament has become a boxing arena? Then we should bring Azuma and Mike Tyson there. Once you turn the place into a boxing ring, then we need professionals to come and box there.”
