Ghanaian Broadcast Journalist, Nana Yaa Brefo has opened up about challenges and threats she has been confronted with in her career as a journalist.
The journalist known for her vociferousness and toughness said the nature of the job demands her to be that way to put politicians on their toes.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s New Day, she recalled instances where Ghanaians have vehemently criticised her noting that she once received a call to look over her shoulders.
She added that “somebody called me and told me be careful where your son goes to school. They are planning something against you.”
“They’ve called to tell me when you are driving be careful they have something against you. A person actually called me to tell me I have been asked to do this to you but I am telling you because I do not want to do it,” she told Naa Ashorkor on New Day, Friday.
Nana Yaa Brefo lamented that although she finds the threats “scary”, it comes along with job and would not allow that to deter her.
“I’m tough. I believe in speaking up your mind without fear or favour…Ghanaians are tough and harsh. Sometimes they do not understand the job you do and sometimes the people you interview don’t get what you are doing… sometimes I report to the police other times I feel it is much ado about nothing,” she stated.
The journalist also recounted an instance where she decided to quit the profession following advise from family and friends to avoid the personal attacks.
“After McBrown’s issue I wanted to relax a bit. Sometimes people can just look at you and hit you with personal attacks. It is not about the job, if it is about the job I don’t mind. You have kids, you have family. Your family will call you and tell you why don’t you let it go or do something else because they personally attack you and want to hurt family,” she stated.
According to her, she rescinded her decision after some Ghanaians urged her to press on after she had made a post about quitting her profession.
The Radio and TV Presenter joined Media General’s Onua TV/FM as the host of Yen Nsempa morning show on Onua 95.1 FM on Thursday, February 1.
After resigning from the Multimedia Group as a newsreader and co-host on Adom FM and TV, Nana Yaa Brefo joined the Angel Broadcasting Network, owners of Angel TV/FM.
She joins Onua TV/FM with over decade experience in media and broadcasting.
