President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana’s justice system is intact despite the latest investigation that exposed some of the country’s judges and judicial staff taking bribes to transgress justice delivery.
More than 180 staff of the country’s judiciary, including 34 judges, were captured in a three-hour edited video by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas receiving bribes in various forms from litigants.
But Commenting on the issue for the first time Wednesday morning, the President pointed out that “”…this is not a problem of our judicial system as a whole,” adding “this is not something to make us lose our faith in the judicial system.”
The President noted that the ongoing investigations into the matter “has prove[d] beyond doubt that our justice system is intact and working”, noting and being “served by many people with integrity and determination”.
He thus urged everyone to keep faith in the system, saying “justice will always prevail!”
He said those caught in the video seemed to be willing to transgress the principles of a fair justice to their own interest.
The President said all those caught in the video allegedly taking bribes to transgress justice delivery should be subjected to fair investigation and trial.
“Such persons should be subjected to what they, perhaps, denied others: a fair investigation and a fair trial” he said in a Facebook post on his wall Wednesday morning.
He, however, said Ghanaians must understand that the people captured allegedly taking bribes may or may not be guilty, and that Ghanaians should leave that “for the investigators and the judges to decide”.
