CETAG declares indefinite strike over unpaid market premium, book and research allowances

The College of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike over failed attempts to reach an agreement with government on a roadmap to the payment of their market premium and book and research allowances. The decision to embark on a strike as contained in a statement issued Monday, October 29, was reached at an emergency National Council meeting of CETAG in Kumasi on Monday. According to the statement, “the highest decision-making body of the Association resolved to embark on an indefinite strike action with immediate effect in all the forty-six public colleges of education”. CETAG said their decision was premised on “failure to reach agreement with Government on Interim Market Premium as well as Book and Research allowance for members of CETAG, after a three-month period of negotiation.” According to CETAG, they have engaged government on several occasions to legitimately negotiate their salaries and other conditions of service as is provided for in the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) Act 737 (2007). These engagements they said proved futile because government took an entrenched position, one which CETAG deems “unacceptable” Leadership of CETAG has therefore asked all tutors across the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana to embark on indefinite strike action with immediate effect, till government finds the requisite fiscal space to accommodate their claims.
