A Banking consultant Dr. Nana Etuahene says he is not in support of banks going for smaller license. President of the Ghana Bankers Association, Alhassan Andani has called on banks that are unable to raise the GHȻ4 million capital requirements set by the Bank of Ghana to go in for smaller licenses. But speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise morning show on Thursday, Dr. Etuahene said, “when people say smaller license, I want them to be very clear about their definition of what a smaller license is. The person should tell me what a smaller license is, because previously there were commercial Banks, and they were reissued with universal company license “so what is he talking about?” he questioned. He stated that savings and loans companies are in a different criteria all together, insisting they are not banks. “I don’t want people to be general; they should be specific, because the savings and loan capital is different.” He however said the Bank of Ghana has done well for the past 10 years, but there is more to be done in order to deal with banks that managed to secure fake licenses.
