Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sent a congratulatory message to Faure Gnassingbe, who was recently re-elected as president of Togo.

President Gnassingbe beat closest contender Jean Pierre-Fabre to retain his seat.

“The decisive nature of his victory, which has subsequently been confirmed by the Constitutional Court of Togo, reinforces the hopes and beliefs of the Togolese people that the path of democracy is the surest way of achieving development, prosperity and progress for their country,” Nana Addo said in a statement released on Thursday, May 7.

“I wish President Faure Gnassingbe well, and respectfully urge him to strengthen further the ties that exist between our two nations, as well as use his high office to hasten the process of regional integration,” Nana Addo added.

Togo borders Ghana to the east. Relationship between the two countries grew cold in the ‘90s during the tenure of President Jerry John Rawlings and Gnassingbe Eyadema, Faure’s father, but NPP’s John Agyekum Kufuor thawed the relationship after assuming the presidency in 2000.
