The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has urged all Ghanaians to accept the Five Pesewas coin and trade with it.

Head, Currency Processing Operations, Currency Management Department at the BoG Dominic Owusu, told TV3’s Manu Afful that the coin is still a legal tender hence as good citizens, Ghanaians must use it.

Some traders who spoke to TV3 indicated that they were unable to make transactions using the Five Pesewas coin because their customers do not accept it.

“Normally, when I go to the mall and buy something and they give to me I give it back to them because I don’t know how many I will add to it to to give to anybody, so I just dash it,” said a buyer.

Another said “It is useless because you cannot even get pure water at 20 pesewas and so the One pesewa, what will you use it to buy?

But Mr Owusu urged both traders and customers to make it a priority to use the coin.

“Bank of Ghana has not removed this pesewa coin from from circulation , it is a legal tender. The public must accept it for transaction , it also applies to the five pesewa.

“If you remove the one pesewa coin or it doesn’t exist, it means you start rounding up prices and that is not an internationally acceptable practice.

“So Bank of Ghana promoting and regulating, supervising payment of settlement systems in Ghana must make sure that change can be given right to the last pesewa. So as a good citizen it means that we must accept it and use them,” he said.
