NDC’s United Cadres Front damns critics of #Dumsormustop Vigil

0

The United Cadres’ Front (UCF) of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned some government and party communicators who have criticized some showbiz personalities embarking on a campaign against the power crisis.

The celebrities; Yvonne Nelson, Lydia Forson and Sarkodie, are set to lead  the #Dumsormustop Vigil aimed at piling pressure on  government to fix the energy crisis which has persisted for nearly three years.  years.

The UCF in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Efanam Komla Nyaku Felix, said the named celebrities and whoever wants to join the protest are Ghanaians and are entitled to hit the street whenever they feel aggrieved.

The statement further read “We have observed with deep concern the negative reactions purported to be coming from some supporters of the Party against the intended vigil by some celebrities in the country,” the statement said.

It added: “The comments so far leave much to be desired and we think they must cease forthwith. This is because we think such reactions are rather making the celebrities more visible than their chosen carriers have made them.”

“We also think that they are Ghanaians who have also been availed the legitimacy of the RIGHT to do what they intend doing by the 1992 Constitution.

“Agreeably, what the initiator (Ms. Nelson) of the vigil put in her face book wall was unpalatable, we think the vulgar and unprintable words attributed to some supporters is not the best. We take exception to Alhaji Alidu Haruna’s attack on the celebrity but who with boldness quickly came out and without reservations poured out his heart – apologizing to her and other celebrities.

“It is our position that it was foul language from our rival New Patriotic Party that swayed floating voters to the NDC in the last two elections and it is prudent on the part of NDC activist to be circumspect in what we say from now on.

“We therefore use this medium to condemn such bad utterances and particularly the very last one coming from Stephen Atubiga who has threatened burning CDs of the vigil-organizing celebrities. It is our desire that if they cannot hold their mouths in decorous deliveries, they should leave the NDC out and individually own up to what they say,” the statement concluded.

Akufo-Addo congratulates re-elected UK PM David Cameron

0
Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated British Prime Minister David Cameron after successfully being re-elected last Thursday.

The Conservative Party, which Mr Cameron leads, won 331 out of the 650 seats in the House of Commons to secure overall majority.

“This is to congratulate warmly British Prime Minister, David Cameron, and the Conservative Party for their victory in Thursday’s general elections,” Nana Addo opened his statement on Sunday.

He observed that the outcome of the election “is a clear vote of confidence in the sterling leadership provided by David Cameron and the Conservative Party” in the last five years.

“Upon assuming office in 2010, David Cameron met an economy caught in the global financial crisis, a growing public debt, and rising unemployment.

“He came in with a plan, set the right priorities, stayed focused and has delivered on where it matters most – the economy.

“The results in Thursday’s polls show that the British people believe that their Government, under David Cameron’s leadership, has restored confidence and is delivering on the economy, on jobs, and on improved living standards which are providing families with a growing sense of security.”

Nana Addo expressed excitement of his party about the Conservatives’ victory “because the values we both share – beliefs in individual liberty, freedom and responsibility, respect for human rights and the rule of law, the principles of democratic accountability, the efficacy of the market economy and social justice – have proven again to be the surest way towards steering any nation back onto the path of strong economic growth and prosperity.”

I’d be a better president than Mahama – Minority Leader

0
Minority Leader in Parliament Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu says he would have done better than incumbent John Dramani Mahama as a president given the way the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole/Bamboi Constituency has managed the country’s economy.

The Suame Constituency MP analogized that: “My performance in parliament is 100% better than that of John Mahama during his parliamentary days.”

Mr Mensah-Bonsu made these claims in an interview on Kumasi-based Fox FM on Saturday, May 9.

He further compared the president with his party’s leader, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, saying the former MP Abuakwa South MP was several times better than President Mahama while he was MP.

Both President Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo left Parliament in 2008 after having served as legislators 16 years apiece.

“He [John Mahama] is my friend and I know what he can and cannot do.”

But asked whether he may be considering the highest position of the land, the Minority Leader quipped.

“Which policeman wouldn’t want to become IGP?”

NDC ‘stole’ our members – PNC Chairman

0
Greater Accra Region Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Bala Maikankam says the party will fight to secure at least 10 per cent of total valid votes to be cast during the 2016 general elections.

He says PNC had what it takes to do so but for problems to do with leadership.

“We noticed our problem goes with logistics and our leadership are not descending down to the roots,” he noted.

“This time around we have [meeting grassroots members] in our agenda.”

Mr Maikankam made these known during a meeting with some party members in Accra.

He said the party is targeting at least 12 parliamentary seats in 2016.

He accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of taking its members after it was established in 1992.

“NDC took our members because in those days if you mention the Zongo communities, it’s for PNC.”

PNC’s Hassan Ayariga came fifth during the 2012 elections after polling 0.22 per cent of the total valid votes cast. He trailed candidates of the NDC, New Patriotic Party (NPP), Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP).

The party has begun reorganizing itself ahead of the next elections, having opened nominations for the election of national executives.

Sack Kwabena Agyapong – Dr Amoako Baah to NPP

0
Outspoken Senior Lecturer of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Dr Richard Amoako Baah has asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to immediately dispense with General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

The head of the Political Science Department of KNUST claims Mr Agyepong’s continuous stay in office will have a serious toll on the opposition party.

He made this known in an exclusive interview with TV3’s William Evans Nkum on Friday, May 8.

Recent developments within the top rank of the NPP have confirmed perceptions of a deep rift especially between the Chairman and General Secretary, on one hand, and the rest of the national executives, on the other hand.

An emergency Steering Committee Meeting held on Monday, May 4 was without Chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Agyepong.

Though senior party members have describedthe Meeting as procedurally constitutional, Mr Agyepong slammed executives present as sabotaging him and the Chairman.

According to him, there was nothing emergency about Monday’s Meeting.

But Dr Amoako Baah is advising the party to immediately sack Mr Agyepong to better its chances of reclaiming power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwabena Agyapong: There was no emergency in ‘NPP emergency meeting’

0
The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyapong, has expressed disgust at recent happenings within the party with regards to a purported ‘emergency meeting’ organized in the absence of the national chairman and himself.

“The chairman was back in the country by 12 o’clock on Tuesday and I was back from Kumasi at 1:25 thatTuesday. This meeting could have waited for Tuesday 3pm and all this would have been perfect” he opined.

Mr. Agyapong was of the view that the persons who organized that meeting on Monday deliberately did so in the absence of the two party executives.

His comments come on the back of an ’emergency steering committee meeting’ which was held to deliberate on the party’s ongoing parliamentary primaries; a meeting that has generated a public debate.

Pouring out his frustrations on Accra based Oman Fm, he explained that he was in Nkoranza to bury his in-law when he had a call about an emergency meeting. He indicated that the issues being raised were not as urgent and suggested that the meeting date be postponed.

According to him, he told them he would not be able to make it on Monday and proposed a 24 hour postponement by which time both he and the chairman would be present .

“They ignored my suggestion and went ahead to hold the meeting. I have not commented on it; but some unscrupulous persons took to the media peddling allegations and falsehoods about me and the chairman that we intend to break the party”.

My Agyapong indicated that there are some factions within the leadership of the party who are striving to undermine his efforts at helping the party annex power in 2016.

He singled out the First Vice Chairman, Freddy Blay whom he said has been using his newspaper (Daily Guide) to consistently malign and mock him.

Relationship with Nana Addo

Kwabena Agyapong dismissed rumours that there is a fracas between him and the flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo. He added that he and the flagbearer have had a long standing relationship and was amazed at the deliberate attempt to break the good relations he has with him.

“Nana Addo and I spoke for 45 minutes last Sunday. We are on very good terms and I gave him my piece of mind. We met about four times last week. He is someone I have served for a long time.

“When he needed help as a presidential candidate in 1998…some of us had the courage to support and travel with him across the country so he knows what I have done for him. It’s the detractors that are working to frustrate our relations so anytime they see both of us together they get uncomfortable”, he said.

This kind of attitude is not good and would not help the efforts of the party in its attempts to build a united front going into the 2016 elections, he advised.
