“The chairman was back in the country by 12 o’clock on Tuesday and I was back from Kumasi at 1:25 thatTuesday. This meeting could have waited for Tuesday 3pm and all this would have been perfect” he opined.
Mr. Agyapong was of the view that the persons who organized that meeting on Monday deliberately did so in the absence of the two party executives.
His comments come on the back of an ’emergency steering committee meeting’ which was held to deliberate on the party’s ongoing parliamentary primaries; a meeting that has generated a public debate.
Pouring out his frustrations on Accra based Oman Fm, he explained that he was in Nkoranza to bury his in-law when he had a call about an emergency meeting. He indicated that the issues being raised were not as urgent and suggested that the meeting date be postponed.
According to him, he told them he would not be able to make it on Monday and proposed a 24 hour postponement by which time both he and the chairman would be present .
“They ignored my suggestion and went ahead to hold the meeting. I have not commented on it; but some unscrupulous persons took to the media peddling allegations and falsehoods about me and the chairman that we intend to break the party”.
My Agyapong indicated that there are some factions within the leadership of the party who are striving to undermine his efforts at helping the party annex power in 2016.
He singled out the First Vice Chairman, Freddy Blay whom he said has been using his newspaper (Daily Guide) to consistently malign and mock him.
Relationship with Nana Addo
Kwabena Agyapong dismissed rumours that there is a fracas between him and the flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo. He added that he and the flagbearer have had a long standing relationship and was amazed at the deliberate attempt to break the good relations he has with him.
“Nana Addo and I spoke for 45 minutes last Sunday. We are on very good terms and I gave him my piece of mind. We met about four times last week. He is someone I have served for a long time.
“When he needed help as a presidential candidate in 1998…some of us had the courage to support and travel with him across the country so he knows what I have done for him. It’s the detractors that are working to frustrate our relations so anytime they see both of us together they get uncomfortable”, he said.
This kind of attitude is not good and would not help the efforts of the party in its attempts to build a united front going into the 2016 elections, he advised.
