Commonwealth Games: Boxer Joseph Commey secures Ghana’s first medal

Team Ghana are set to win their first medal at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after boxer Joseph Commey qualified for the featherweight semi-finals.

Commey promised before the games that he would win a medal for Ghana, and he has delivered. His appearance in the semi-finals guarantees him at least a bronze medal, but he is expected to go for gold.

He advanced to the medal round by defeating New Zealand’s Alex Mukuka in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.

The youngster defeated a tough opponent in Mukuka by unanimous decision.

This comes after Ghana’s sole medalist in the 2018 Gold Coast Games, Jessie Lartey, was eliminated by England’s Mohammed Harris Akbar in the men’s 67kg Light Middleweight event.
