The 2020-2021 season of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) started over the weekend.

3Sports takes you through some questions that will be running through conversations surrounding the topflight league.

Hearts of Oak to break league jinx?

Accra Hearts of Oak won their last league title in 2009- that is some 11-years ago. They have always had a topsy turvy campaign since their last league triumph. The closest they have come is placing third on two consecutive seasons –2015-2016 and 2016-2017. They go again this season with high hopes of breaking the long-term drought, but can they?

Top scorer for the season?

Top scorer for the 2020-2021 Ghana Premier League season will be very difficult to decide. The league has lost two of the three strikers who performed well in the truncated league season; Victorien Adebayor and Prince Opoku Agyemang but will welcome the services of former top scorer Hans Kwofie to the league. Kwofie will have competition from Yahaya Mohammed and newly signed Hearts of Oak forward Abedenego Tetteh.

Asante Kotoko’s first choice goalkeeper?

It was a busy window for Kumasi Asante Kotoko, they made 9 new additions in the Nana Yaw Amposah era including Razak Abalora into their team.

Before Abalora’s arrival, Kwame Baah had beaten captain Felix Annan to the number one spot.

Razak Abolara coming in as a Black Stars material will bolster his chances in the goal poles and Felix Annan has a point to prove as the captain and one of the club’s highest paid players. Kwame Baah will go into the season as the goalkeeper who enjoyed more playing time in the truncated league season. Who will Maxwell Konadu select to be his number shot stopper is still a question many will be looking forward to get an answer when the season commences.

Finally, a Medeama SC season?

The Tarkwa based side have been unlucky in the past two seasons which was declared null and void. On one occasion, the Yellow and Mauves were on top of the league and were part of the top performing clubs in the other season.

They go again this season having made some great acquisitions into the team which was performing better in the truncated league.

The Samuel Boadu-led team will come into the season as one of the favorites, but will this be their first time to deliver a league title in their history?

Top 4 finish?

The Ghana Premier League has been very competitive in the last years and this season promises to be more competitive judging from the business of the clubs.

The top 4 performing clubs will be difficult to settle on at the moment.

Dreams FC, Berekum Chelsea FC, Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Ashantigold SC, Medeama SC and Aduana Stars will all be competing for a spot within the top 4.
