Convener of the Fix the Country Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has challenged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to seize the historic mandate handed to him in the 2024 general elections to implement transformational reforms.
According to Barker-Vormawor, Mahama has no excuse to fail Ghanaians, given his unique position as a one-term president without re-election pressures.
In a Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor highlighted the scale of Mahama’s victory:
“Mahama got 56 percent of the popular vote, 14 out of 16 regions, 68 percent of the military vote, and 80 percent of the police vote. Over two-thirds majority in Parliament. A president with experience who can hit the ground running from day one.”
He called Mahama’s win a once-in-a-generation opportunity for constitutional reforms, probity, and accountability, likening it to a mandate comparable to Kwame Nkrumah’s era.
“It took 32 years, eight regular election cycles, and two runoffs to get here. This is a mandate to build a legacy no one has ever built, apart from Nkrumah. If this trust is wasted, Ghana may never come close to its vision again.”

Barker-Vormawor further warned that the only obstacle to Mahama’s success would be internal sabotage within the National Democratic Congress (NDC): “Wallahi, only the NDC can sabotage the NDC at this rate.”
Mahama’s Assurance to the UN
Meanwhile, President-elect Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering on campaign promises while addressing Ghana’s pressing challenges. During a meeting with the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani, on Tuesday, December 11, Mahama acknowledged the weight of expectations following his election victory.
He assured the UN of a collaborative effort to restore Ghana’s stability and credibility:
“We need to tweak existing programmes to meet today’s realities. We have had discussions with the World Bank and IMF and look forward to early engagements to ensure we remain on track. Debt repayment is a major concern; we need to smooth the process to avoid defaults, which could be catastrophic.”
Abani congratulated Mahama on his victory and historic appointment of Ghana’s first female Vice President, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to supporting his administration:
“Ghana holds a torch for democracy and peace in West Africa. Your leadership is critical to restoring these values.”
Mahama also stressed Ghana’s geopolitical importance and his desire to strengthen ties with UN agencies to address challenges such as erratic rainfall patterns and potential food shortages.
“We need you more than ever. Ghana is critical to the geopolitics of West Africa and Africa in upholding democracy and peace. We aim to restore this reputation quickly.”
Mahama acknowledged the enormity of the task ahead, noting the unprecedented margin of his victory as a reflection of Ghanaians’ expectations:
“I anticipated we would win, but not by such a margin. This shows Ghanaians have very high expectations. I am working swiftly to meet them.”
He assured that his administration would manage expectations responsibly while addressing Ghana’s pressing economic and social challenges.
