We must build bridges not barriers – Mahama calls for unity at National Day of Prayer

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to put aside political, religious, and tribal differences that jeopardize the unity and advancement of their nation.

In a fervent appeal for national unity, President Mahama emphasized the critical need for citizens to respect one another and encouraged Ghanaians to use words and actions that heal rather than harm.

The President gave his remarks during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1 at the Forecourt of the State House.

“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, against the voices of religious extremism and against the poison of political hostility. These are the seeds of division that we must never let take root in our precious nation, Ghana,” he declared.

“We must speak a language of peace, compassion, and mutual respect. We must build bridges, not barriers, for we are one people sharing one land and pursuing one identity and destiny,” he noted.

President Mahama also used the opportunity to address leadership and accountability, emphasizing that holding public office is a sacred duty rather than a way to further one’s own interests.

“We must hold those in authority, including myself, accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility. Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and a responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable,” he said.

He reaffirmed his belief in equality before the law, stating, “Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law.”

The National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service brought together religious leaders, political figures, civil society groups, and citizens from across the country. It served as both a spiritual gathering and a moment of national reflection, with calls for unity, moral leadership, and national renewal.
