Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko says officiating has been okay at the ongoing U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite Ghana’s precarious position as they face an early exit.

After escaping a late fightback from Congo by earning a 3-2 win in their first game, Ghana suffered a 5-1 defeat to tournament hosts, Morocco in their second game leaving them in a tight situation ahead of their last group game against Guinea.

After the heavy defeat, some fans called out the referee citing poor decisions following a number of contentious calls.

However, Tanko believes, with the support of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the officials performed well.

“The performance of the referee, I can’t say much because we have the VAR which is supporting them,” he said to the media.

“All the decisions they take are okay so I think they are doing very well.”

Ghana have a lifeline in their last group game as they battle it out with Guinea on Friday evening.

Black Meteors must win at all costs to progress to the next stage of the competition following their current position on the table.

With three points Guinea are second behind Morocco who have earned a place in the semifinals with six points while Ghana sit third trailing based on goal difference.

They are still holding on to their target of making it to the next Olympic Games to be held in Paris in 2024 by winning one of the three available slots at the AFCON to return to the quadrennial event since missing out for nearly 20 years.
