Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence that the 2023 African Games will be a success, similar to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast.

Ghana is hosting 53 African nations participating in 29 disciplines at various venues across the country.

Speaking at Ghana’s 67th Independence Day celebration in Koforidua on Wednesday, Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the nation’s preparations and efforts, believing all stakeholders involved will have a delightful experience.

“Football tends to attract more attention and, therefore, the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire dominated the headlines for the one month it took place. The Ivorian national team, the Elephants, defied all odds and won the competition. I am not promising a Ghana clean sweep of track and field events. That would be a miracle, but I am promising a happy and exciting month for all our visitors,” he said.

Some disciplines like Table Tennis, Karate, and Badminton are already underway ahead of the opening ceremony that takes place on Friday, 8th March at 3 pm.

However, Ghana’s strongholds at the African Games will be Football, Athletics, and Swimming, as the nation’s athletes and stakeholders aim for glory and more slots at the upcoming 2024 Olympics in France later this year.

Egypt currently leads the medal table with four, having secured two gold medals.
