Nigeria staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Australia in an exhilarating match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, leaving the home team’s qualification for the last 16 in doubt.

Australia took the lead when Emily van Egmond capitalised on Caitlin Foord’s pass to score the opening goal. However, Nigeria quickly responded, equalizing through Uchenna Kanu’s composed finish. The momentum swung in Nigeria’s favour as Osinachi Ohale’s header put them ahead at 2-1.

A mix-up between Australia’s Alanna Kennedy and Mackenzie Arnold allowed Asisat Oshoala to capitalise and extend Nigeria’s lead further. Despite Kennedy’s late goal for Australia, Nigeria held on to secure a memorable victory.

With this result, Nigeria now top Group B, level on four points with Canada. On the other hand, Australia find themselves a point behind both teams heading into the final matches in the section on Monday.

Australia face a crucial showdown against Canada in Melbourne, where they would need a victory to secure a spot in the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Nigeria will take on the already-eliminated Republic of Ireland at the same time in Brisbane.
