Despite a strong start, which saw Joelinton score a spectacular goal, the Magpies tired as the game wore on and allowed Milan to mount a comeback. The visitors took advantage of Newcastle’s fatigue, scoring twice in the second half to secure their place in the UEFA Europa League.
Despite needing a victory to progress, Newcastle couldn’t overcome Milan’s resurgence. The Italian side’s first goal was scored by Christian Pulisic, who capitalised on a mistake by the Newcastle defence to tap in from close range.
The match then became a back-and-forth affair, with both teams creating chances and hitting the woodwork. Ultimately, it was Milan’s substitute Samuel Chukwueze who sealed the win for his team with a goal six minutes from full time.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain’s draw against Dortmund meant that they finished second in Group F and advanced to the knockout stages. Milan’s victory ensured that they would join them in the UEFA Europa League, while Newcastle were left disappointed and eliminated from European competition.
