Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey has expressed his gratitude and excitement upon receiving a call-up to the Black Stars squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In an interview with his club on Tuesday, January 2, Lamptey said, “It’s an honour and it feels good. I am happy.”

The midfielder was named among three home-based players in the final 27-man squad for Ghana, which was announced by Black Stars coach Chris Hughton on Monday.

Lamptey revealed that he was nervous when the names were being announced, but he believes that his hard work and performances on the local front earned him a spot in the squad. He thanked fans of Asante Kotoko, life patron Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the media for their support and encouragement.

“I am not going to disappoint them,” Lamptey assured. “I really thank them. They should keep praying for me.”

The Black Stars will begin camping on Tuesday, January 2 in Kumasi ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, January 13. Ghana will open their campaign on Sunday, January 14 with a match against Cape Verde in Group B, before taking on record winners Egypt and Mozambique in the same group.
