The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has set January 9 for the conduct of elections to break ties between candidates who obtained same votes in the District Level Elections held on December 19 last year.

According to the EC, the elections will be held at the polling stations where the ties in votes obtained by the various candidates were recorded.

“The said elections will be held on Tuesday, 9th January, 2024 at all the Polling Stations in the Electoral Areas where the ties were recorded,” a press release signed by the Ag. Head of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu said.

The Electoral Commission explained that, “Following the collation of results from the just ended District Level Elections, 20 Electoral Areas for Assembly Members and 41 Electoral Areas for Unit Committee Members across the country produced the same results for the contestants. As a result, there will be the need to conduct Run-off elections in these areas to break the ties to determine the winners in these Electoral Areas.”

It added that, this is “in accordance with the District Level Elections Regulations, 2015 (C.I. 89).”

District Level elections to take place today Tuesday

It would be recalled that eligible Ghanaians went to the polls on December 19 to elect assembly members and unit committee members in the District Level Elections (DLEs).

As expected, patronage was very low. Now, it has emerged that some candidates obtained the same number of votes at some polling stations, hence the need for the tie-breaking elections.
