Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have been the focus of this season’s title race.

It comes as no surprise because both clubs have accumulated 46 points with the Phobians topping the table on goal difference.

It is the norm to see Hearts and Kotoko dominate title conversations because of their respective track records. They have proven themselves on several occasions in the league with a combined 53 titles – 23 for Kotoko and Hearts have 20.

However, the last time either won the league was in the 2013/2014 season, meaning in recent times they have been matched by the ‘smaller clubs’.

Looking at the current standings, four clubs – Great Olympics, Medeama, Karela United and Dreams FC are capable of toppling Hearts and Kotoko with eight games to end.

These four are not far from the top and have every right to fancy their chances of finishing the season with the ultimate.

Olympics and Medeama are the closest with 43 points and sit third and fourth respectively followed by fifth-placed Karela United who have 42 points and then Dreams FC who occupy the sixth position with 41 points.

Only five points separate the top six signaling the race will go down to the wire.

This season’s contest has been tight with six teams sharing top spot at different times.

In the first half of the season, Bechem United who are now six points above the relegation zone, Karela United and Great Olympics occupied the first position most times.

Kotoko and Medeama have dominated in the second round with Hearts of Oak going top for the first time as a result of Friday’s 1-0 win at Techiman Eleven Wonders.

Changes could happen, but whoever is top after matchday 34 will be handed the prestigious trophy and a ticket to represent Ghana at next season’s Caf Champions League.
