Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he will continue in his role as Bayer Leverkusen manager, despite significant interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

He has been heavily linked with the managerial position at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of his departure at the end of the season.

“I feel this is the right place for me as a young coach,” stated Alonso.

Under Alonso’s guidance, Bayer Leverkusen is on the verge of clinching their first Bundesliga title and remains unbeaten in all competitions this season.

The 42-year-old was also considered a potential candidate to take over at his former club Bayern Munich, following the departure of manager Thomas Tuchel at the end of the campaign.

Alonso informed Leverkusen’s directors of his decision to stay at the club last week.

“It’s been a season we have had a lot of speculation regarding my future,” he added.

“Until now we have had so many games, been pretty busy and focused, and I wanted to reflect during the international break and take a decision.”
