Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has shared a remarkable anecdote about his debut goal at the 2006 World Cup, revealing that he had a premonition of scoring against the Czech Republic.
Following Ghana’s disappointing start to the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Italy, expectations were low as they faced the highly-ranked Czech Republic.
However, Gyan defied the odds by scoring just 68 seconds into the match, securing Ghana’s first win in their World Cup history and marking the fastest goal of the tournament.
In an interview on Onua TV’s Onua Maakye show, Gyan disclosed that he had a feeling he would score on the morning of the game and even shared this with his brother, Baffour.
“I prophesied my first World Cup goal. I told my brother [Baffour] in our hotel room when he was leaving for Ghana that I feel I will score. So, I told him to tell Ghanaians I will score. I saw it [before the game]”
The goal at the 2006 World Cup marked a significant turning point in Gyan’s international career, setting the stage for his subsequent success. He went on to score five more goals in two more World Cup tournaments – South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 – becoming the highest-scoring African player in the history of the World Cup.

Eventually, he became Ghana’s all-time topscorer with 51 goals achieved in 109 games.
Since retiring from professional football in June 2023, Gyan has shifted his focus to off-field initiatives. He has launched the All Regional Games project to identify and nurture young talents across various sports beyond football, demonstrating his commitment to sports development in Ghana.
