Members of the pre-tertiary teacher unions are likely to resume their strike before the close of this week.
The unions: Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers are upset that those who represented the government at the negotiations do not have the mandate to do so.
Three weeks ago, the unions called off their strike to allow negotiations to resume. They are demanding negotiations on their conditions of service to include rent and professional development allowance as well as allowance for teachers serving in deprived areas.
However, after calling off the strike, the leadership of the unions are upset that government has failed to speed up the negotiations.
The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko spoke about the possible resumption of the strike.
“There is an uneasy calm, the Ministry of Finance must hear this, sometimes the people they send to the meetings cannot even talk, in the coming days if anything happens, we cannot be blamed for it,” he stated.
The President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu asked government to act swiftly.
“The Labour Commission has given us up to Wednesday to report back to it. We are going to the Commission to ask for extension, it does not come across to us that the Fair Wages has the mandate to negotiate with us,” he asserted.
